Construction of Upparu Bridge in 2011
Before the bridge was built, people had to use a ferry to cross the river, which wasn’t always convenient. But in 2011, the bridge was officially opened, making travel much easier for everyone in the area.
The construction cost around 995 million Sri Lankan rupees (about 9 million US dollars). It was funded by a soft loan from the French Development Agency and also supported by the Sri Lankan Government under the Eastern Awakening program.
Since its opening, the bridge has made a huge difference in transportation, helping local businesses and making daily travel much smoother. The Uppu Aru river, which it crosses, is a brackish water body, often referred to as the “salt river” by locals.
Overall, this bridge has been a game-changer for the eastern region, improving connectivity and boosting economic activities.
